Ultrasonic Testing: Advanced Techniques in Flaw Characterization and Sizing

This course is specifically designed for individuals who have already completed a basic ultrasonic testing course but may not have covered advanced topics such as flaw characterization or sizing techniques. It is also ideal for those seeking a refresher on these critical concepts. The course provides a deeper dive into the factors that affect ultrasonic testing and focuses on accurate flaw detection and sizing methods.

In addition, it enhances the Ultrasonic Examiner’s ability to identify, characterize, and size various reflectors more effectively. While not typically required for NDT Level certification, it provides valuable insights into flaw detection. By fostering a deeper understanding of defects, the course helps build examiner confidence and reduces the likelihood of over-calls or false calls, which can result in unnecessary repairs.

Key topics include:

  • Factors affecting sound transmission: Understanding how material properties, temperature, and environmental conditions impact sound wave propagation.
  • Factors affecting sound reflection: Exploring how the angle of incidence, surface conditions, and material type influence the reflection of sound waves.
  • Echo performance from reflectors: Analyzing how different types of reflectors (e.g., cracks, voids, or inclusions) affect the echo dynamics.
  • Discontinuity characteristics: Learning to identify and assess different types of material discontinuities and their impact on inspection results.
  • Echo dynamics of flaws: Understanding how flaws such as cracks, porosity, and inclusions affect echo patterns in ultrasonic testing.
  • Scanning techniques and flaw mapping: Mastering scanning methods to locate and map flaws in complex geometries.

And much more!

Upon successful completion of this course, students will:

  • Gain a thorough understanding of the various types of ultrasonic testing equipment and transducers, and when to use each type.
  • Develop the ability to accurately characterize ultrasonic signals and interpret the relationship between those signals and material flaws.
  • Acquire the skills to calibrate ultrasonic equipment, perform advanced examinations, and document results in compliance with relevant industry codes.

The course includes 20 hours of hands-on training, during which students will engage in practical activities such as equipment calibration, scanning of various sample materials, and data transfer techniques. This hands-on experience is essential for mastering the advanced aspects of ultrasonic testing.

In addition to the hands-on training, the course provides 40 total hours of classroom instruction, which will be accredited upon successful completion. Students will be assessed through an exam to demonstrate their understanding of the covered topics.

Important Note

This course is not required for individuals who are enrolled in our Ultrasonic Testing Level II course, as those topics are already included in the Level II curriculum. The Level II course comprehensively covers flaw characterization, sizing techniques, and all other advanced ultrasonic testing concepts.

By the end of this course, students will be well-equipped with the skills necessary to perform advanced ultrasonic inspections, accurately characterize flaws, and document results in accordance with industry standards.
