In our Phased Array Level I course; students learn the following six fundamental aspects:

    1. Introduction to Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT): Students are introduced to the principles and basic concepts of phased array ultrasonic testing, including how ultrasonic waves are generated, manipulated, and utilized for inspections.
    2. Equipment Familiarization: Students learn about the various components of phased array equipment, including the control unit, probe, and software interface. They become familiar with the functions and operation of each component.
    3. Basic Calibration Procedures: Students are taught the fundamentals of calibrating phased array probes and equipment to ensure accurate and reliable inspection results. This includes sensitivity calibration to adjust the system’s sensitivity and distance calibration to ensure proper beam focusing.
    4. Scanning Techniques: Students learn different scanning techniques used in phased array inspections, such as sectorial scanning, linear scanning, and focused scanning. They understand how to select the appropriate scanning technique based on the geometry and material properties of the test piece.
    5. Data Interpretation: Students learn how to interpret ultrasonic data collected during inspections. They are taught to identify indications of defects, differentiate between relevant indications and noise, and understand the significance of signal characteristics such as amplitude and time of flight.
    6. Documentation and Reporting: Students learn the importance of accurate documentation and reporting in phased array inspections. They understand how to record inspection parameters, document inspection findings, and prepare inspection reports in compliance with relevant standards and procedures.

Course includes 15 hr hands-on training. These hours incorporate Instructor demonstration of calibrations, explanation of signals from indications, etc. . 40 Total Hours of classroom training are accredited to students after successful completion by demonstration of knowledge by exam. All topics and materials covered in NDE course are as required by ANSI/ASNT CP-105.

    Phased array testing is grounded in the same basic wave physics that supports the conventional flaw detectors and thickness gages that have been in commercial use for more than fifty years. However, the increased capability offered by phased array testing frequently requires a higher level of skill and understanding on the part of inspectors using phased array testing. Thus, the introduction of new phased array instruments calls for the development of new training resources as well.
